Autumn Home Safety: Expert Advice for Seniors to Prevent Falls

Last updated: October 11, 2026

With the changing seasons, Hackensack Meridian Health is emphasizing a crucial aspect of senior well-being: fall prevention. This time of year, with shorter days and potentially slicker outdoor surfaces, presents unique challenges that can increase the risk of falls for older adults. The questions many families and seniors are asking revolve around practical, actionable steps to make their homes safer. Understanding common fall hazards is the first step in mitigating them. These often include issues related to visibility, mobility aids, and the condition of flooring and walkways. Experts consistently highlight the importance of maintaining clear pathways both inside and outside the home. This means ensuring entryways are free of clutter, and outdoor steps and sidewalks are free of debris and potential tripping hazards. Good lighting plays a significant role, especially during dusk and dawn, which are common times for falls. Within the home, bathrooms and kitchens are frequently identified as high-risk areas. Implementing non-slip mats, installing grab bars, and ensuring adequate lighting in these spaces can make a substantial difference. Regular checks of home maintenance, such as securing loose rugs and ensuring stair treads are in good repair, are also vital. For homeowners in Austin, Texas, when considering any home maintenance that impacts safety, especially around entry points like garage doors, it's wise to engage with qualified professionals. When a licensed, insured garage door technician arrives, consider asking: 'What are the common tripping hazards around a garage door entry, and how can they be addressed?' and 'Are there specific lighting or accessibility improvements that can be made to enhance safety for seniors using the garage door entry?'
